July 25, 1978 United States votes to lift Arms Embargo on Turkey by a vote of 57-42

As we commemorate the 50th Dark Anniversary of the illegal invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus, we are reminded of the conditions that were part of the lifting of the embargo on Turkey!

“THE PRESIDENT TO REPORT TO CONGRESS EVERY 60 DAYS ON PROGRESS TOWARD A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT.”

“KEEP AID TO TURKEY UNDER FREQUENT REVIEW AND TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT CONGRESS WAS STRONGLY OPPOSED OF THE TURKISH ARMY’S OCCUPATION.”

On July 25, 1978, the United States Senate compromised our Democratic principles for the sake of expediency.  In the same manner, Turkey blackmailed the Biden Administration to allow the sale of the F16 fighter jets in return for lifting its veto on Sweden’s entry to NATO.

The sale of our Democratic principles continues and Cyprus is still under occupation.
